Five Apps, Six Rounds, No Participation Trophies
The days when short-drama apps were a fringe curiosity passed some time ago. For Q1 2025, Sensor Tower counted about $700M in worldwide in-app revenue for the category, with the US producing 49% of it. Full-year 2025 landed at roughly $2.8–3B, and by Q1 2026 the quarterly figure had grown I’m the Mafia Girl Boss and He’s My Man online to about $750M. Search a store for a short reels app and you will run into at least one of the five names that dominate the conversation: ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave. On the surface they seem identical, with vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute or two and a weekly pass waiting behind the paywall. The differences lie underneath, in ownership, pricing, platforms and extras, and they shape what you pay and where you can watch. We put them through six rounds and named a winner in each, relying on only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026.
The Master Comparison Table
The entire field fits on one screen here, before the rounds start. Prices are the figures displayed in the US App Store as of September 2026, and they vary by country, platform and promotion. The market shares come from Media Partners Asia estimates for the microdrama market outside China. We pulled install counts from each app’s Google Play listing. Where a cell says « not reported », no reliable source published the figure, and we would sooner leave a gap than guess. See the rounds below as the commentary and the grid as the scoreboard.

Round 1: Who Owns Them and How Big They Are
Being the incumbent, ReelShort still holds the most weight. It was launched by Crazy Maple Studio, a Sunnyvale company backed by China’s COL Group, in August 2022, and MPA credits it with about 29% of the market outside China. Per MPA estimates, its 2025 revenue was $785M, with $1.05B forecast for 2026. DramaBox, run by Singapore’s StoryMatrix as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology, launched in April 2023 and holds about 21%. By Q1 2026 the two were level at roughly $140M each, with DramaBox ranked first, even though in Q1 2025, Sensor Tower had ReelShort ahead $130M to $120M. The newest app in this lineup is DramaWave, often mistyped as « dreamwave », yet it already holds about 13%, and its annualized revenue reportedly exceeded $700M by Q2 2026. ShortMax operates from Hong Kong and seems to be the same app as ShortTV from Jiuzhou Culture. The only app with Fox Entertainment as a shareholder is My Drama, even though it is the minnow with 5M+ Android installs. For context, GoodShort, which sits just outside this field, holds about 6%. Winner: ReelShort, narrowly, on market share.
Round 2: What It Costs
This is the round where the apps appear most alike. On the US App Store, ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave all sell a weekly pass at roughly $19.99, and each one auto-renews. ShortMax also lists a $9.99 « Weekly Pass Pro », and DramaWave’s weekly VIP starts at $7.99. DramaBox takes another route, offering auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99 along with special offers from $4.99. Among these US listings, the only verified monthly plan is DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99, the clear standout. Since four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass total about $80, a monthly plan at less than half that is the better buy for steady viewers. The winner: DramaWave, whose monthly plan undercuts four weekly renewals by a wide margin. Since prices vary by country, platform and promotion, the number on your screen may be different.
Round 3: Free Options
Free viewing is where the marketing gets loud and the details get thin. One rewarded ad unlocks two premium episodes, and the first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free, per ReelShort’s own blog. Maintain a seven-day check-in streak and you earn 100+ coins, although free reward coins usually expire while paid coins do not. ReelShort also maintains official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion, the easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying. DramaBox has free options too, but its exact figures for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins appear only in third-party guides. Stay away from look-alike sites, modded APKs and « unlimited coins » generators, which are unofficial and never a safe shortcut. The winner: ReelShort, clearly.
Round 4: Where You Can Watch
Real differences show up on screens, where these apps genuinely part ways. On top of iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android, ReelShort also streams in a browser at reelshort.com, with progress syncing across devices. DramaBox’s website mostly directs you back to the app, and DramaWave’s verified presence is its iOS and Android apps. Because its domain points to the ShortTV website, ShortMax also offers web browsing. My Drama holds the trump card: an Apple TV app for tvOS 18 or later, which ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show. For anyone who only needs a shorts app on your phone, any of the five will do. Round winner: ReelShort overall; My Drama wins the living room.
Round 5: Library Size and Originals
ShortMax is untouchable on raw numbers. The app claims 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages. As of January 2024 the company behind ShortTV had produced more than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets, mostly dubbed Chinese adaptations. DramaWave claims 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages, and reports say more than 80% of its newly released content is AI-generated. The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, give ReelShort the edge on recognizable hits, and both of them went viral in November 2023. For its part, DramaBox brings an LA production team and originals such as Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis. The most intriguing pipeline belongs to My Drama, because Fox has committed to 200+ vertical titles over two years. The winner: ShortMax, on sheer volume.
Round 6: Extras and the Fine Print
Here, DramaWave runs away with it. Offline downloads, on-screen comments and 1080p video are promised in its App Store listing, and no other app in this comparison is verified to offer offline viewing. Anyone who switches between phone and laptop will find ReelShort’s cross-device sync the next most useful perk. And take a look at the fine print, which varies more than the prices do. ShortMax’s terms say refunds are not given « unless the paid product/service is unusable », and My Drama forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity. Deleting the app does not cancel your subscription on any of these apps, so cancel in App Store or Google Play settings instead. Winner: DramaWave.
Best For: The Final Picks
Since no single short drama app sweeps every round, the best choice depends on how you watch. Best for Apple TV is My Drama, the one app here with a verified tvOS version and the only one with Fox-produced originals. When it comes to web viewing, ReelShort is best, thanks to a full browser player and progress that follows you between devices. For commuters and steady bingers, DramaWave is best, pairing offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan. ShortMax is best for sheer volume, since its claimed 50,000+ dramas dwarf everything else in the grid. Ranked first by Sensor Tower in Q1 2026 and picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class, DramaBox is best for backing the current revenue leader. Best for free, legitimate sampling is ReelShort again, with its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels. Tempted by all five? Pick one, cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day.
